John Krasinski's IF landed in the top spot at the box office over the weekend, collecting an estimated $35 million dollars in ticket sales.

The live action - animated comedy stars Ryan Reynolds as a man who teams with a young girl, played by Cailey Fleming, 17, who discovers she can see others' imaginary friends.

Together she and Reynolds' Cal work to find new kids for imaginary friends or 'IFs' who've been left behind as their children grew into adulthood. 

Critics and audiences reacted very differently to the family friendly film.

The adventure scored a very low 49-percent from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while moviegoers gave it a healthy 87-percent rating.

According to Variety, the film which cost $110 million to make, was expected to earn $40 million its first weekend in theaters. 

IF is expected to have a long life over the summer as families try to beat the heat, but will face new competition over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend from another animated adventure, The Garfield Movie. 

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes fell to second place after debuting at number one last week. 

The Sci-fi adventure set far in a future in which apes have become the dominant species on Earth earned $26 million, according to The Numbers. 

The fright flick, The Strangers: Chapter 1, debuted in third place.

Madelaine Petsch and Ryan Bown star as a young couple forced to check in to a remote cabin after their car breaks down in a spooky small town. 

The couple spend the night being terrorized by three masked strangers.

The thriller, directed by Renny Harlin, scared up $12 million.

The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, dropped to fourth place after debuting at number two last week.

The dramedy about a down and out stuntman who turns detective to find a missing actress has earned a health 82-percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The action movie pulled in an estimated $8.45 million over the weekend.

Challengers rounds out the top five. 

The tennis centered drama starring Zendaya, Josh O'Connor and Mike Faist, which scored $2.9 million.

Back to Black entered the box office race in sixth place.

The biopic starring Marisa Abela as the late singer Amy Winehouse opened in limited release, earning $2.85 million. 

Seventh place went to the spooky thriller Tarot. The movie about a group of pals who try to see their futures, but end up unleashing demons trapped is cursed cards uncovered an even $2 million in ticket sales. 

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire continues to attract audiences.  After eight weeks in theaters, the sci-fi adventure is in eight place. 

The film collected another $1.7 million over the weekend, for a new total of $194 million domestically and $561 million worldwide.

The faith based Unsung Hero made $1.1 million in ticket sales for a total of $19 million since it opened four weeks ago

The Blue Angels debuted in ninth place.

The Amazon Studios documentary about the elite Navy/Marines flying squadron opened in 227 theaters and earned $1.3 million.

The faith based Unsung Hero, which focuses on the rise of the group For King and Country and singer Rebecca Smallbone, landed in 10th place. 

The family friendly film made $1.1 million in ticket sales for a total of $19 million since it opened four weeks ago.
